Mr. Peabody,
a poorly bred and abused puppymill/ petstore Dalmatian, is the "face"
of the Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project. His short, frequently pain-filled life,
was the inspiration for his "mom" to spearhead the fight for tough,
self-funding, enforceable new laws to put an end to pet profiteering.
It took 12
years, but on 1 December 2009, Governor Doyle signed
WI Act 90, the
ground-breaking Wisconsin Dog Seller's Law, which, with the addition of
detailed
Administrative
Rules, went into effect on 1 June 2011.

though we still have a lot more work to do -- Promises Kept!
"Our animals shepherd us through certain eras of our lives.
When we are ready to turn the corner and make it on our own...
they let us go."

Promises Kept

You run in different fields now. Effortless.
You jump and play with wild abandon. Painless.
Eternally young and carefree. Timeless.
There is a shroud over my heart. Darkness.
Days are longer and empty without you. Cheerless.
I still keep your pillow next to my bed. Sleepless.
The years march on. Ceaseless.
The memories never wane. Impervious.
I feel the moment of my fading, then...Brightness.
We run in different fields now. Effortless.
We jump and play with wild abandon. Painless.
Together for all eternity. Glorious.

"We who choose to surround ourselves
with lives even more temporary than our own,
live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only certain immortality,
never fully understanding the necessary plan."
