Dear Sen/Rep Name:
Congratulations on your
re-election to office. It must be re-assuring to know that the people of
Wisconsin have such confidence in your judgement and decision-making abilities!
As you
settle back into your role a representative for the people of Wisconsin, I'd
like to talk with you about an issue that is very important to me as a
tax-payer and citizen of this state. I don't know how familiar you are with the
industry of Puppy Mills, but Wisconsin has become fertile ground for so-called
"commercial pet breeders" because we do not have any laws or
regulations to govern these facilities.
Puppy
mills are the epitome of cruelty to animals. They keep helpless dogs in tiny
chicken wire cages with minimal food and water, little or no veterinary care,
and no positive human contact. They breed these animals until they cannot
produce anymore and then they throw them away.
In a
state founded on farming values, this is an atrocity. Animals, at the very
least, should be respected and cared for in a compassionate way.
While
other states like Pennsylvania and Virginia pass laws and increase regulations
to reform this puppy mill industry and to advocate animal welfare, Wisconsin's
outdated and inadequate statutes have not changed, so we have become a magnet
for this cruelty. Wisconsin needs laws NOW to stop this horror.
Currently, Illinois is
proposing legislation to help deter the puppy mill industry. It is called the
Chloe Bill, and, among other things, seeks to limit the number of unaltered
dogs a breeder can own.
This
winter, legislation will be introduced to help stop the suffering of these
innocent dogs. Please support this legislation. Let's not allow Wisconsin to be
the kind of state that follows -- let us be the kind of state who LEADS! Let's
make changes to how we treat our animals TODAY.
Sincerely,
